Shower Tiling: What Sits Under the Tiles

A shower tiling quote has more lines than a floor. Ask for each to be priced:

  1. Removal. Old tiles off, at R80 to R150 per m² (Guide ER-T).
  2. Screed. The shower floor's fall to the drain.
  3. Waterproofing. R2,000 to R4,500 per shower (Guide ER-T), or R150 to R300 per m² for wet areas (Guide B3).
  4. Tiling. Wall labour at R220 to R380 per m² (Guide ER-T), plus the floor.
  5. Grout and sealant. Grout, and flexible sealant at corners and at the tray or bath.

Section 57(7) of the City's Water Services By-law forbids installing a tap where a leak cannot readily be detected and repaired. Shower mixers and stop taps are set so the tiling leaves them reachable.

Floor and Wall Tiling Beyond the Bathroom

Tiles that lift or sound hollow near a shower or bath can be a sign of water getting under them. Ask for the cause to be checked before retiling: see leak detection on the East Rand.
